Air treatment solutions for the automotive industry

Clean, dry compressed air is vital to the automotive industry for various applications. Compressed air is used to change and fill tires, for spray painting and finishes, and to power most of the tools used in an auto body shop.

The importance of dry air in spray painting

When compressed air is used for spray painting, condensation can build up in the compressor, causing water to enter into the air stream and into the spray paint resulting in wasted product. Installing a refrigerated dryer that gives a pressure dew point of about 3 °C/37°F, is the cheapest and easiest way to remove the moisture and humidity from the air. Installing particle filters to reduce the amount of particles that enter the air and installing an oil separating filter (for rotary screw compressors) is also recommended. Using air with high levels of moisture can also rust air tools over time regardless of the application.

Other applications within the automotive industry

Nitrogen is also used in the automotive industry for a number of other applications, including inflating tires. Nitrogen is beneficial, especially in motorsports, because nitrogen is less likely to move through the tire rubber than oxygen is, meaning that your tire will hold its' pressure longer than if you filled it with regular oxygen or air. Temperature does not affect nitrogen-filled tires as much as oxygen filled tires. When soldering electronics for automobiles, nitrogen is also used during the assembly, to eliminate the presence of oxygen. This removes the threat of oxidation and keeps seat upholstery from deteriorating and helps the chemicals in paint to dry faster.
